Headers may be constructed full width by using 2-by-10’s, or they may be created by using 2-by-6’s filling in above them with cripple studs. Traditional headers are created by nailing 3/8-inch plywood spacers between the header boards to create the same thickness in the header as the 3-1/2-inch width of the studs.
